One factor necessary for maintaining spiritual health is staying in touch with all of Scripture. That is important because a biblical understanding of life calls us to bring all of Scripture to bear on a given situation. For example, we might develop a view of God as being a benign grandfather if we are not acquainted with stories such as the flood in which He destroyed everyone living except for eight people because of their wickedness.
Of course, it takes a while for new Christians to develop knowledge of the entire Bible. This is why it is important for them to receive guidance from reliable teachers who are familiar with the entire sweep of Scripture. However, as we grow to the place of spiritual maturity we have the responsibility to develop a working knowledge of the entire Bible so that we can apply Scripture to the situations of life for ourselves.
While I was looking up a passage the other day I found myself in unfamiliar territory. I heard a little voice go off in my head saying, “Uh-oh. It’s time to go back through and familiarize yourself with the entire body of Scripture.” So I have already started a program for reading through the Bible in 2017.
There are a number of approaches to reading through the Bible in a year. I have chosen to use the “Today” resource e-sword. It includes the option for reading through the Bible chronologically. That is what I plan to do this year. Maybe reading through the Bible in 2017 would provide a boost to your spiritual health also.
