A recent New York Times article reported that in Indian villages when a girl marries, she moves into the home of her new in-laws where she is required to show submission to them in various ways. The article describes one of these. “Each morning, before she is allowed to eat, the daughter-in-law must wash the feet of her husband’s parents and then drink the water she used to wash them.” The existence of such a custom is not surprising since it was produced by the same culture that gave us sati, the requirement that a widow immolate herself on her husband’s funeral pyre.
What drives people to engage in such practices? The answer is culture. Next to God, arguably the most powerful force in the universe is culture. Our culture controls virtually every aspect of our lives: our beliefs, attitudes, values, and behaviors. Occasionally an individual or group will rise above culture, but that is the exception.
The Left, a minority in America, has gained and maintains dominance in America because it has managed to reshape American culture to reflect its agenda. When Pres. Obama asserted that he would fundamentally transform America, he was not merely referring to American government but more profoundly to American culture. With the help of the news and entertainment media, our educational system, our courts, and other entities he has largely achieve that objective.
For the Left, Donald Trump’s victory constitutes a disastrous outcome not only because it provides conservatives with political power, but more foundationally because it represents a repudiation of liberal culture, which includes tenants such as big centralized government, transgender bathrooms, hostility toward law enforcement, racial division, open borders, erosion of the rule of law, trashing of the Constitution, and abortion. Trump’s victory announces to America and the world that the culture of the Left is so irrational, so dysfunctional, so offensive, so immoral that the American people have finally risen above culture to proclaimed that the king has no clothes.
In order to maintain its cultural grip on America, the Left is using every means available to delegitimize Trump’s victory and presidency, to convey that it does not represent American culture, that this is not who we are.
They achieve this by funding rioters, whose behaviors announce that Trump’s election is so un-American, so illegitimate, so incompatible with who we are that creating mayhem is the only moral response. The media then propagate their message as representing the attitudes of American society in general.
Students, easily manipulated by liberal professors, are likewise used to convey that Trump’s election is so outrageous that Americans no longer feel safe and are struggling with psychological meltdown. Survival requires providing them with safe places and counselors. Counselors are usually sent in response to school shootings and other tragedies. It is essential for the Left to place Trump’s victory in that category. It constitutes a political Columbine, a conservative rampage that is culturally slaughtering American youth. These unfortunate students, confronted by this cultural savagery must receive help to work through their psychological trauma.
The CEO and cofounder of GrubHub, Matt Maloney, conveyed a similar message of cultural catastrophe regarding the Trump victory in an email to his employees. He described his tortured perception of Trump and his agenda in asserting, “I absolutely reject the nationalist, anti-immigrant and hateful politics of Donald Trump and will shield our community from this movement as best I can.” It is telling that he seems not to be put off by Hillary’s lies, anti-American rhetoric and behavior, her threat to national security, or her eagerness to abort late-term babies. None of those misdemeanors are of concern to Maloney, but only the felonies of Trump such as wanting to protect our borders and follow our immigration laws.
Maloney draws his message to a conclusion with the warning, “If you do not agree with this statement then please reply to this email with your resignation because you have no place here.” In other words, agree to the agenda of the Left or I will fire you. Notice that the mandate to reply forces his employees not only to behave in a certain way but to believe in a certain way, that is, Maloney’s way. Employment at GrubHub requires abandonment of personal beliefs and adoption of Maloney’s political and moral orientation.
Maloney’s email conveys a parallel message to the rioters and the distraught students, that Trump’s election is so immoral, so irrational, so un-American, that the presence of one of his supporters at GrubHub would poison the corporate environment.
Indri Noovi, CEO of Pepsi conveyed a similar attitude toward Trump’s victory. Tony Perkins reports,
In what was no doubt an exaggeration, she claimed “Our employees were all crying.” While the executive staff may have been distraught, I find it hard to believe that there wasn’t a single Trump supporter in a company of 263,000. Nevertheless, she went on, “And the question that they’re asking, especially those who are not white, ‘Are we safe?’ Women are asking, ‘Are we safe?’ LGBT people are asking, ‘Are we safe?’ I never thought I would have to answer those questions.” Noovi’s message to the country was simple: “We should mourn.” Next, she insisted, “We have to… assure everyone living in the United States that they are safe.”
So there you have it. Trump is so racist (never mind that he went out of his way to appeal to the black community), so hostile toward homosexuals (the fact that he had one speak at the Republican national convention notwithstanding), so misogynist (disregard his excellent reputation among his female employees), that his election is creating uncontrollable fear among all of Pepsi’s 263,000 employees.
The message the Left is desperately seeking to propagate, that it must propagate, is that Trump’s election is an outlier, that he does not represent American culture, and consequently all of the American people are responding to this cultural misfit with riot, fear, and psychological meltdown.
Armed with the media, the educational system, industry leaders possessing huge amounts of money, and in large measure the courts, the Left will continue to seek to convince the American people that only a lunatic fringe embraces the ideas and values advanced by Trump. Our response must be unequivocal. We must use our voices and finances to demonstrate to GrubHub, Pepsi, and other propagators of the culture of the Left that they comprise the cultural lunatic fringe and that we have had enough of their misrepresentation of who we are.
