My last post made the case that the current political battle ultimately is a spiritual one. The Apostle Paul taught:
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:12 ESV)
Also we saw in Daniel 10 angelic forces fighting for domination over nations.
In this post I want to broaden out my discussion of the spiritual warfare related to America from our current election to our nation as a whole.
Prior to the 1960s America was predominantly a Christian nation culturally. Though we were a secular nation in our form of government and in the fact that most Americans were not genuine believers, Christian concepts and ideals had so permeated our culture that they become the dominant force in the shaping of our national worldview and behaviors. For example, the Ten Commandments were widely accepted as describing how we should live and were posted in classrooms and courtrooms as reminders.
Beginning with the hippie movement in the 1960s, our Christian culture was displaced by a post-Christian culture. For example, we have lost our commitment to marriage, instead sanctioning cohabitation as being okay. I discuss this culture shift in my book, Counterattack: Why Evangelicals are Losing the Culture War and How They Can Win.
To understand our present national situation, including the significance of our current election, it is essential that we recognize the spiritual dimensions of this culture shift. It did not merely entail trading a Christian worldview for a secular one, but in addition it opened the door for evil spiritual forces to flood into our country and dominate our major institutions such as our schools, courts, government, and news and entertainment media.
This influx of evil could be seen right from the beginning of this culture shift in the characteristics of the hippie movement. Everything about that movement promoted evil. For example. it brought to our nation drugs, the legitimizing of sexual promiscuity, and hostility toward authority.
Despite the horrendous damage inflicted on America by this movement and its ongoing influence, Americans, and even many evangelicals, still glamorize it as the good old days. I asked a mother whose son’s life is being ruined by drug addiction whether she did not hold the hippie movement accountable for this outcome, since it was that movement that brought drugs to American society. There is every reason to believe that apart from the hippie movement her son would not be on drugs. I found it fascinating that despite its destructive influence on her son’s life, she could not bring herself to cast the hippie movement in a negative light.
Hippies morphed into yuppies, bringing the moral degradation of that movement into mainstream America, ultimately moving from Haight-Ashbury to boardrooms and finally to the White House in the person of Bill Clinton.
The evil of this movement has born its full fruit during the presidency of Barack Obama, who has unilaterally legalized homosexuals serving openly in the military and is forcing states to allow biological men access to women’s restrooms and shower rooms. The spiritual nature of his agenda exposes itself in his hostility toward Christians and toward Israel. Ultimately his animus is directed toward the God of the Bible.
My point in this post is that we must recognize the presence of spiritual forces in these developments. We are not just dealing with people holding different perspectives on morality and forcing those perspectives on our nation. Much more profound than that, we are witnessing the unleashing of demonic forces in our society, driving people of influence in our nation to advance wickedness of every form at every opportunity. These developments ultimately are the work of evil spiritual forces using willing human instruments to do their work.
The evil developments in this country are far too powerful, far too coordinated, far too focused, and far too unified to be explained merely at the human level. Because of the obvious orchestration of the advancement of evil in our society, many conservatives are convinced that some conspiracy must be behind it. They are correct regarding the presence of a conspiracy, but they miss the reality that the conspiracy is not taking place at a human but at a spiritual level. Satan is orchestrating the demise of our previously Christian nation, against which he holds an unholy hatred.
In my previous post I made the case that our only but sufficient weapon against the forces of evil that have flooded into America beginning with the 1960s is prayer. We must fervently ask God to unleash 12 legions of angels to drive out the demonic forces that have taken up residence in America across the past half-century. Only then will we witness the reinstitution in America of the righteousness that exalts a nation.
Just as military battles require total exertion over a protracted time, spiritual warfare, the battle to take back America through prayer, demands the same. The ultimate question confronting America today, especially as this election approaches, is whether God’s people are willing to wholeheartedly engage in the fight through prayer to drive the demons out of America.
