Have you ever baked a cake and left out just one ingredient. Garbage disposals were make for such products. Everything else can be perfect, but no baking powder and your daughter’s birthday cake will look like a pancake.
Our federal government is suffering from such a missing ingredient. If they would just put this ingredient into the mix, they would engender success. Even if this ingredient were just present in one branch of the government we might stand a fighting chance of producing something edible. But its absence is making a disaster of our nation.
The missing ingredient is integrity. Integrity is an easy term to understand because of its relationship to the word integration. Integrity requires a life that is integrated, fits together. It excludes being committed to your wife and having a girlfriend on the side. It rejects having one attitude toward the boss to his face and another in conversations at the water cooler. It refuses delivering a product that differs from the one described during the sale. It requires behaviors that match promises.
In making Thursday’s Supreme Court decision on ObamaCare, integrity would have required the Court to be faithful to its responsibility to interpret the law, which would have been easy enough to do. Unfortunately, six Justices, lacking the integrity to fulfill their commitment to the nation used their skills to pervert language and distort reason. They simply chose to deliver a product inconsistent with the commitments they made when they took the job.
Our President has displayed the same lack of integrity in regard to ObamaCare and with many other issues. For example, he has repeatedly changed the laws related to Obamacare unilaterally, which comprises a breach of the Constitution he swore to uphold. He also showed a lack of integrity is repeatedly misrepresenting ObamaCare to get it passed.
Our Congress displayed integrity meltdown in promising to terminate ObamaCare if they gained control of both houses of Congress. The voters gave them their wish, and they immediately reneged on their promise, which they had the power to keep. An even greater display of the integrity deficiency by the House resided in their repeatedly passing bills to rescind ObamaCare when the Democrats controlled the Senate, knowing that these bills would never pass the Senate, but when they had to opportunity to defund ObamaCare, which was in their power, they refused to do it. Therefore, they not only chose not to rescind it, but they did all within their means to create the false impression that they were trying to do so. Therefore, they not only broke their promise, but they were also deceptive about it.
Thankfully, we have some people of integrity on the Supreme Court and in Congress. Justices Anthony Scalia, Clarence Thomas, and Samuel Alito are to be commended for their courageous position on the ObamaCare ruling. However, we have come to a time when the numbers of people in government with integrity are too few to overcome the deceit and corruption of those lacking it. Isaiah graphically describes the condition of America.
Ah, sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, offspring of evildoers, children who deal corruptly! They have forsaken the LORD, they have despised the Holy One of Israel, they are utterly estranged. Why will you still be struck down? Why will you continue to rebel? The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint. From the sole of the foot even to the head, there is no soundness in it, but bruises and sores and raw wounds; they are not pressed out or bound up or softened with oil. (Isaiah 1:4-6 ESV)
In this description Isaiah also includes the cause. We have forsaken the Lord, the source of integrity. This one ingredient our government lacks is only available from one Source. Our post-Christian culture can only produce post-Christian corruption. America’s only hope is to tear down that post, and to remove from power the people who put it up.
