Four times in the last book of the Bible God pronounces that He is the Alpha and the Omega.
- “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” (Revelation 1:8 NKJV)
- “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last,” (Revelation 1:11 NKJV)
- And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. (Revelation 21:6 NKJV)
- I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.” (Revelation 22:13 NKJV)
In these verses God explains what He means in stating that he is the Alpha and the Omega: He is asserting that He is the beginning and the end, that He was the initiator of this universe and of history and that He will finish it. In this final message to humanity God repeats this fact four times so that we don’t miss it and so that we know that He means it.
As He reveals in this last book how He is going to bring it all to an end, He wants to put everyone on notice that history is His story, and though He allows human beings and other spiritual beings to play a role, He is the director of the drama. Though it may appear, and some humans believe, that they have been in control of the events of history, He is conveying that He has been behind the scene, pulling the strings.
Therefore, one practical dimension of this pronouncement resides in its assurance that as the One who began history, has been in charge throughout, and will finish it according to His plan, those events predicted in this book possess the same certainty as if we were reading history past. No doubt about it—this is exactly how it will end, precisely as this book asserts. Phrases such as “but on the other hand” or “but maybe” don’t appear in this account of future events.
What I find intriguing, especially in the light of these four assertions by God that he is the Alpha and the Omega, is that as we approach the final days of history, the ones spoken of in this book, God has provided us with overwhelming proofs that He in fact is the Alpha and the Omega. New and powerful verifications that He in fact is the initiator and the terminator have developed just in recent years.
It is almost as if as human beings are confronted with the final chapter of history God wants to make clear to unbelievers regarding the One with whom they are dealing so that they can respond appropriately as events unfold.
I believe that He also provides this evidence exclusive to these last days as a source of comfort to believers as the world situation becomes more trying. Never in history has the persecution of Christians been so widespread and aggressive. The storm clouds are gathering. Even here in America with the recent furor over attempts by the state of Indiana to give Christians assurance of a fair hearing in court we see the forces of evil exposing their hatred. As the days grow darker God wants to assure us that He, and not the forces of evil, will determine the outcome.
In my next post I plan to discuss recent findings verifying that God is the Alpha. In the post after that we will examine unfolding evidence revealing that He is the Omega—that is if we are still here.
